Resources by JF Manila (Exercises, Assessment, Sample Curriculum)

Is it time consuming to create teaching materials such as PPT, practice exercises or exams from scratch?
If so, we would like to share with you supplementary teaching materials officially created by the JF Manila.
We prepared four types: Base Slides for IRODORI Classes, Exercise Forms, Assessment Tools, and Sample Curriculum.

Base Slides for IRODORI Classes

As the name implies, the Base Slides for IRODORI classes are PowerPoint files that correspond to each lesson of the IRODORI books according to the recommended lesson flow – it also has embedded audio files for easier access during listening activities.

As you can see in the screenshot, the embedded audio files position can be freely changed.

Access the link and fill out the form to be granted access: IRODORI Base Slides Application Form
★We regularly check the responses of the application form every Friday, so please expect the access to be granted on Friday as well.

After downloading the files, users can freely modify it by adding their own pictures, animations, and other effects to cater to the different needs of the students.

IRODORI Exercises Form

●IRODORI A1 Per Topic Quiz
As the name implies, these exercises are divided by topic, designed to be administered to the class after completing one IRODORI A1 topic.

Focused on vocabulary, kanji, and expressions, its categories include 1) look at the illustration and choose the most appropriate answer, 2) choose the kanji reading or hiragana that matches the word, 3) look at the illustration and answer the questions, and 4) choose the expressions or phrase that fit the most.

Assessment Tools

If you wish to check your students’ progress but find it hard to create a standardized system on your own, we have also created JF Standard-based assessment tools.

  • IRODORI Level Check Test

The Level Check Tests were created based on the JFT-Basic exam format. Thus they may either be administered as a mock exam or simply as a “level check“.

As it follows the JFT-B format, unlike the IRODORI Exercises, these tests include a listening part. Its categories include 1) Script and Vocabulary, 2) Conversation and Expression, 3) Listening Comprehension, and 4) Reading Comprehension.

▷IRODORI A2-2 level check test:

○ Type 1:IRODORI A2-2 Level Check Form (Type 1)
○ Type 2:IRODORI A2-2 Level Check Form (Type 2)

★The A2-1 level check test is still under development, so please wait for a while.

Both the IRODORI Exercises and the Level Check Tests may be used by teachers as is or as a format to create more exercises and tests.

As they are all in Microsoft Forms, teachers will have to use a Duplicate page to be able to administer them in class. For a step-by-step guide on how to use them, please refer to the instructions below:

  • Performance-based Assessment

Aside from the students’ receptive language skills (listening, reading), teachers must also track their progress in output or productive and interactive language skills (conversation, writing). However, proficiency exams and exam style assessment tools do not usually measure them. Thus, the JF Manila created JF Standard performance-based assessment tools tailored to Filipino Nihongo teachers.

As these tools were created primarily as formative assessment (for tracking student’s progress in the middle of an IRODORI course), they are both aimed at measuring A1 level skills.

Role Play Test

As its name suggests, the Role Play Test is an assessment tool that measures the students’ conversation skill level through a role play.

The Role Play Test Kit contains both Japanese and English versions of the 1) Role Cards, 2) Guidelines, and 3) Evaluation Form.

Before implementing the test, the teacher/tester must carefully read the guidelines first. As it is a standardized assessment tool, as much as possible, it must be implemented in a one-on-one setting as indicated in the overview.

▷Links for Role Play Test Kit:

    • Guidelines (Nihongo Version): ガイドライン
    • Guidelines (English Version): ガイドライン (English Version)
    • Role Cards: 01.ロールカード
    • Evaluation Form (Nihongo Version) : 02-1.判定記入用紙
    • Evaluation Form (English Version): 02-2.判定記入用紙 (English Version)

The step by step procedure is indicated in the guidelines, but for the purpose of simplification, the instructions have been summarized below:

① Explain the purpose and procedure of the test to the student.
② Let the student read the first Role Card (A).
③ Begin the role play (Follow the Role Play Sample Conversation Flow and the Tester Action in the guidelines).
④ Following the Evaluation Criteria, note the student’s score (◎/〇/△) for Role Play Evaluation in the Evaluation Form.
⑤ Follow the same procedure for Role Card (B) and (C).
⑥ Once Role Play Evaluation is complete for the three tasks, note the student’s overall score for the Level Evaluation on the Evaluation Form. Follow the Sample Evaluation Patterns in the guidelines.

★Teachers may customize the role cards depending on the Can-do and skill-level they wish to assess.
★These assessment tools will continuously be improved based on your feedback. Please send your feedback through our official Facebook page: IRODORI by JFM

Writing Assessment Tools

The writing assessment file, on the other hand, contains a Holistic Evaluation table, an Analytic Evaluation table, and a Written Assessment Rubric.

The Holistic Evaluation is for scoring the student’s overall task achievement—whether the student’s writing skill level for the particular Can-do is at A1 level. The teacher may encircle or put a mark on the overall score.

The Analytic Evaluation is for scoring the breakdown of the student’s knowledge and skills needed to achieve the writing Can-do. For the Analytic Evaluation score, the teacher may refer to the Written Assessment Rubric as guide.

Sample Curriculum

Aside from the exercises and assessment tools, the JF Manila also created a Sample A1 Curriculum for institutions and teachers who are unsure how to transition to IRODORI from Genki, Minna no Nihongo and other traditional Nihongo textbooks.

If you need help planning your own IRODORI curriculum, you may refer to our sample as guide.
