The links above are courses on how to study reading and writing hiragana and katakana on your own. In these courses, interactive study materials will help you learn hiragana and katakana as you read and type single characters as well as easy words and phrases. Materials on how to write are also available for those who want to learn the strokes and handwritings.

Kanji

For those interested in kanji and wish to study thoroughly starting from the basic level, we highly recommend you to study kanji with this course. Using the interactive study materials, you will learn the kanji and vocabulary, read sentences, and match the kanji with their meanings. Also, we have supplementary materials for those who wish to practice typing and writing kanji.

Memory Hint App series are applications that make learning fun with associative mnemonic pictures and games. There are hiragana, katakana, and kanji apps. All available to download for free by clicking on the links. We hope you find them useful in your study of the characters!


MARUGOTO Plus (No registration needed)

MARUGOTO+ (MARUGOTO Plus) is a website where users can learn about Japanese language and culture based on the contents of the “MARUGOTO: Japanese Language and Culture”, the official course book of the Japan Foundation. Learners can use this website to review and practice at their own pace. There are practice sections for hiragana, katakana, and kanji, as shown in the link above. We recommend this as a  material that encourages self-study of the Japanese characters.
