TAHANAN / LAI / THUYEN

The Japan Foundation in partnership with Mum & Gypsy is pleased to present TAHANAN / LAI / THUYEN — FUJITA Takahiro’s Online Theater Project: A three-part collaboration of Japan with three ASEAN countries: The Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam.

This project aims to explore the possibility of creating a different “shared space” where theater practitioners from Japan, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam are connected and united to tell familiar but unique stories.

About

The original concept of the project was first performed in March 2021 through the collaboration between  FUJITA Takahiro, a prominent figure in the world of Japanese contemporary theater, and twenty-four actors from all over the Philippines. The project was also in partnership with Tanghalang Ateneo, Kasing Sining and Teatro Guindegan.

In 2022, the project expanded to include two more locations, namely Thailand and Vietnam. In their respective languages, TAHANAN became LAI and THUYEN.

In LAI and THUYEN, we explore a different perspective of how each culture define what “home” is. In each performance we experience its meaning through the artists’ connections with objects and people.
