The Japan Foundation paves the way for a new direction in Asian Jazz as it brings to Manila “Unit Asia”, a musical collective of notable jazz artists from Japan, Malaysia, Thailand, and the Philippines in October.
Unit Asia performs in Manila with Filipino jazz luminaries – Tots Tolentino (saxophone) on October 25, 7:30 pm at Merk’s Bar Bistro, Greenbelt 3, Ayala Center, Makati City, and Sitti (bossa nova vocalist) on October 28, 8pm at the Music Museum, Greenhills, San Juan. While the show on October 25 is strictly an invitational affair, the performance on October 28 is open to the public and free of admission charges. Reservations are required.
Unit Asia’s members are Isao Miyoshi (guitar, Japan), Koh Mr. Saxman (saxophone, Thailand), Tay Cher Siang (piano, Malaysia), Shigeki Ippon (bass, Japan), and Hiroyuki Noritake (drums, Japan).
JAPAN FOUNDATION NOW ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR ITS GRANT PROGRAMS ON ARTS AND CULTURE
Interested Filipino artists (individuals/groups) are welcome to submit their proposals for the following Japan Foundation Arts and Culture Grant Programs: 1) Exhibitions Abroad Support Program (Visual Art Exchange); 2) Support Program for Translation and Publication on Japan; and 3) Support Program for Film and TV Production on Japan.
All proposals shall be submitted to the Japan Foundation, Manila not later than Friday, November 28.

Grant Program for Intellectual Exchange Conference
F.Y. 2009-2010
The Japan Foundation, Manila announces its Grant Program for Intellectual Exchange Conference for F.Y. 2009-2010. The program provides grants to cover partial expenses in carrying out international intellectual collaborative projects, such as international conferences, which are designed to deepen mutual understanding and establish closer relations between Japan and other countries while promoting intellectual exchange all over the world. Priority is given to projects that will involve participation from a number of countries and encourage interaction between various sectors of society.
The Japan Foundation Program Guidelines

The Japan Foundation offers various grants to individuals and organizations. These grants are intended for Japan-related projects in the fields of culture, arts and education.
The Program Guidelines for fiscal year April 2009 – March 2010 is now available at the Japan Foundation, Manila (JFM). Please note that only individuals can apply for the Japanese Studies Fellowship Program, Graduate Program on Japanese Language and Culture (M.A. / Ph.D. Courses) and the Japanese Language Program for Researchers / Postgraduate Students. The “Grant Program for Cultural Presentation Abroad” and the “Grant Program for Cultural Cooperation” are for individuals / organizations. Other programs are designed for institutions / organizations. The Japanese Studies Fellowship Program (social sciences and humanities) is highly competitive; it is open to preeminent scholars, experienced researchers and cultural specialists.

Japanese Language Proficiency Test
on December 7 (Sunday) Manila, Davao City & Cebu City
The Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) will be held on Sunday, December 7, 2008; it will commence simultaneously at 9:00 a.m. in three (3) different venues – at the De La Salle University, Taft Ave., Manila , Philippine Nikkei Jin Kai – International School, Angliongto Ave., Lanang, Davao City and at the University of San Carlos, P. Del Rosario St., Cebu City. The JLPT is administered once a year – worldwide, by the Japan Foundation in cooperation with other cultural exchange/educational institutions, in order to evaluate and certify the Japanese language proficiency of non-native speakers.

“Sensei no Nihongo Advanced (SNA) with Practice Teaching Course (PT)” (SNA: Oct.11 - Dec.13, 2008) (PT: Feb. - Mar., 2009)
The Japan Foundation, Manila in its continuing effort for the professional enrichment of Filipino Nihongo Teachers and for further encouragement of Japanese Language Education in the Philippines, will open on Saturday, October 11, 2008, a course entitled “Sensei no Nihongo Advanced with Practice Teaching Course”.
The course is open for active Nihongo teachers who wish to further improve their Japanese proficiency and teaching skills. Applicants are expected to have intermediate level of Nihongo proficiency (JLPT Level- 2 or equivalent).

“Sensei no Nihongo 3 (SN3) with Practice Teaching Course(PT)” (SN3: Oct.8 - Dec.15, 2008) (PT: Feb - Mar., 2009)
The Japan Foundation, Manila in its continuing effort for the professional enrichment of Filipino Nihongo Teachers and for further encouragement of Japanese Language Education in the Philippines, will open on Wednesday, October 8, 2008, a course entitled “Sensei no Nihongo 3 with Practice Teaching Course”.
This course is open for active Nihongo teachers and for those who plan to become Nihongo teachers. Applicants are expected to have already mastered elementary level of Nihongo (JLPT level-3 or equivalent).
