The International Silent Film Festival is back with a bigger and better lineup! This year, original participants
Goethe-Institut, Instituto Cervantes and Japan Foundation are joined by the embassies of the Czech
Republic, France and Italy in treating moviegoers to screenings of classic silent films scored live by local
bands. This year’s festival takes place in Shangri-la Plaza, with main screenings at Cinema 1 and special
screenings of some of the films with the original score at Listening In Style.
The 2008 lineup includes silent film classics “The Black Man with a White
Soul/El negro que tenía el alma blanca” from Spain, “Cascading White
Threads/Taki-no-shiraito” from Japan, “Faces of Children/Visages d’enfants”,“The Oyster Princess/Die Austernprinzessin” from Germany and “Cabiria”
from Italy.
The festival opens on August 26 with a screening of Spanish director Benito Perojo’s 1926 film “The Black Man with a White Soul/El negro que tenía
el alma blanca”. It is the story of a black descendant of slaves that settles in
Madrid as a servant of an aristocratic family, from whose house he flees to
avoid the racist treatment that he suffers from one of its members. Having
decided to make a name for himself among the dancers who animate the
nightlife of cabarets, Pedro Valdés travels to Paris, where he hopes to prevail. The film will be accompanied
by a live vocal arrangement by Novo Concertante Manila, conducted by Arwin Tan.
On August 27, catch Kenji Mizoguchi’s 1933 drama "Cascading White Threads/Taki No Shiraito", based
on the 19th century novel written by Kyoka Izumi. In it, Shiraito, a strong-willed water magician in a circus,
travels around the Hokuriku district with her act until she meets a timid boy named Kinya Murakoshi. His
boyish sensitivity attracts the independent Shiraito. They must part ways, but she sends him money so he can
go to law school. Like many of Mizoguchi's heroines, Shiraito sacrifices her own happiness in order to provide
for the man she loves. The film will be accompanied by the music of Bob Aves.
The 1929 Czech film “Erotikon”, directed by Gustav Machaty, will be screened on August 28. This
forerunner to Machaty's “Ecstacy” examines the moral consequences of a night of unbridled passion between
Prague playboy George, who is forced to stay the night after missing a train, and a provincial stationmaster's
daughter who becomes pregnant. “Erotikon” was the first Czech film to receive international acclaim.
On September 2, catch “Faces of Children/ Visages d’enfants”, scored live by Jack Rufo with Yosha.
The 1925 film by French director Jacques Feyder is a drama of a boy living in the village of Haut Vallais, who
loses his mother.
The 1919 Ernst Lubitsch comedy “The Oyster Princess/Die Austernprinzessin” will be accompanied by
the music of Noli Aurillo with The Schübligs, featuring Louie Talan, Wendell Garcia and Kakoi
Legaspi on September 3. The film is about a pampered American oyster tycoon who decides to find a prince
to marry his daughter. Things don't go quite as planned. Along the way, there are mishaps, misunderstandings
and a foxtrot sequence that must be seen to be believed.
The last main screening will be on September 4. Cineastes should not miss the 1914 Italian classic “Cabiria”, directed by Giovanni Pastrone. The film is the
story of a girl, Cabiria, who is separated from her parents during the Punic Wars
in the Third Century B.C. In her odyssey through the world of ancient Rome,
she observes the eruption of Mt. Etna, endures capture by pirates, views the
barbaric splendor of Carthage, and witnesses both human sacrifice and Hannibal
crossing the Alps. Providing the music will be DJ Caliph 8, who will be joined
by Matt Deegan and Malek Lopez.
All the above screenings are at 7pm at Cinema 1 of Shangri-la Plaza. Tickets
are P75 (advance selling available). There will also be additional screenings of
most of the films with their original score at 5pm on August 29 and
September 5-8 at Listening In Style, 5/F Shangri-la Plaza. Admission to the screenings in Listening In
Style is free, but seating is limited.
