5th Virgin Labfest
Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP)


A festival organized by the CCP, the Writer's Bloc, and the Tanghalang Pilipino Foundation, Inc. showcasing fifteen (15) new plays, public staged readings, talkback sessions; a forum among playwrights, directors and actors; and a creative writing workshop among selected high school students. A highlight of this year's Labfest will be the launching of the Virgin Labfest Anthology featuring fifteen best plays of the festival throughout the years, including Yoji Sakate's "Three Sisters: A Noh Play".

On its 4th year, the annual contemporary dance festival with a motif: ‘The Evolving Body’ continues to explore the work of contemporary dance artists. The festival will feature New Choreographers Competition, IndepenDance (Independent Dance Shows), Uncensored Bodies (short dance film competition), Photo Exhibit, 2nd Step (Wifi Body’s Past Competitors), In Focus (a closer look on independent dancers), Contemporary Dance Workshops, and much more!

The Japan Foundation, Manila has invited Ms. Maki Morishita, a multi- awarded Japanese contemporary dance artist, to participate in this year’s festival.

An annual film festival featuring multi-awarded contemporary films from Japan. This year’s offering brings together 7 contemporary films and 1 anime film in 35mm format. An invitational screening of Always – Sunset on Third Street (Always San-chome no yuhi, 2005) by director Yamazaki Takashi will be held on July 2, 2009 (Thursday) at 7:00 p.m. at the Shangri-La Plaza Cinema 3, Edsa, Mandaluyong City.

All films will be shown with English subtitles. Admission is free.

Japan’s young classical musicians – Mr. Susumu Aoyagi (piano), Ms. Takako Hagiwara (flute), Ms. Ayako Ishikawa (violin), and Ms. Risa Kataoka (koto) – form a new quartet as Japan’s Ambassadors of Music to celebrate Philippines-Japan Friendship Month. Filipino classical and jazz guitarist, Mr. Butch Roxas, joins them in the spirit of cultural camaraderie.

Morning sessions feature Japanese classical musicians share current trends in teaching and learning classical music in Japan. In the afternoon, apanese music producer, Mr. Hiroyuki Takashima shares experiences in the Japanese music industry which includes his personal insights in once bringing the Beatles to Japan.

While the morning sessions are exclusive for music faculty and students, the afternoon talk is open to the general public.

Admission is free for the activities, however, registration for the morning workshops are required due to limited slots.

The Japan Information and Cultural Center (JICC) and the Japan
Foundation, Manila provides educational programs for elementary, high school, college students and private organizations entitled Hello! Japan Program. This multi-faceted introduction to the society and culture of Japan includes a PowerPoint presentation, video showing, an introduction to festivals, food, language and kimono and a high level of audience participation through volunteers who come on stage.

J-POP Anime Singing Competition

J-Pop and Anime fans are invited to watch the Grand Finale as the 10 best groups dodge their way to prevail as the 1st ever J-Pop Anime Singing Competition Winners. The competing groups will perform one (1) Japanese song popularized in anime or J-Pop. Embassy of Japan Certificates and Japanese Language Scholarships from the Nihongo Center Foundation await the top three winners. As part of the celebration of the 2009 Philippines-Japan Friendship Month, it aims to further promote appreciation of the Japanese language and culture among Filipinos and to strengthen the long-standing friendship between Japan and the Philippines.

Mr. Larry Greenberg an expert and aficionado of Japanese Silent Films and the CEO of Digital Meme (the company responsible for restoring Japanese Silent Films) will show his rich collection of Japanese anime and silent films, to be followed by a lecture to introduce the uniqueness and culturally entertaining side of Japanese films to the Filipino movie-goers. Admission is free!

The Japan Foundation, Manila (JFM) and the Kakehashi Foundation, in celebration of the Centennial of Baguio, bring to the City of Pines, Japanese photographer Kazuyoshi Miyoshi’s Japan World Heritage Sites series at the Baguio-Mt. Provinces Museum from April 18 – June 30, 2009. The photographs will be displayed within an art installation by Mr. Chit Ramirez.
